Starting over

I'm still not completely better, this cough won't go away and I have very little energy. I think that partly comes from the slight shortness of breath - I can't really do anything normal, even walking up the stairs leaves me far more winded than it usually would.

Nonetheless, I feel the need for a fresh start. Today was a holiday here so despite a busy start to the weekend, with dinner at a friends on Friday (tastiest duck I have ever eaten, from Silver Hills Farms) and then a lie-in on Saturday followed by a beer-tasting with some people from choir in the afternoon which turned into sitting around chatting until after eleven, I still had two days with nothing planned. I gave myself a day in bed yesterday, only moving to the couch in the late afternoon and was going to get some stuff done today. And then today I decided the rest was more important than getting stuff done. And I am very glad to have had another day of taking it easy. It makes the possibility of a new start seem more realistic now somehow.

So, small steps to start with. I did the washing up. The last load of washing in just out of the machine and hung to dry. And I made a pastryless quiche for dinner, which is really pretty good. I've started reading some weight loss blogs and following a WeightWatchers thread on an Irish discussion forum, which is really helping to focus my mind a bit more and get me on track again. Normally being sick throws me really off when it comes to healthy eating but this time round hasn't been so bad as I almost completely lost my appetite. Very strange for me and it has come back but still isn't quite what it usually is. I'm trying to look on the bright side and appreciate it for now because it's not just healthy food I'm not in the mood for, it's junk, too. Gotta take your silver linings where you find them!

  1. Here are a few old wives’s tales to help with your cough. Before you go to bed put Vicks vapor rub on the bottom of your feet and put socks on and sleep with them on. Also to help keep germs down in your house cut and peel an onion and put half on your night stand and the other half in the kitchen or where ever you like, it will help eliminate the germs in the house.
    Recipe for cold and cough
1tsp of apple cider vinegar plus 1tsp of honey plus 1tsp of water.
    Take 3 times a day.
I know it sounds odd, but it might help. God Bless you!! I hope your cough gets better. Hugs Kay

  2. I think the best you can do when sick is to just rest up. Coughs especially will *not* go away without completely pulling up on activity and recuperating.

I haven't checked out many weight-loss blogs, but the personal finance ones are so motivating. It takes time to keep up with them, but it's worth it.

  3. I've spent several days reading your blog from start to finish, and wanted to thank you for being so open about everything. I hope you're healing.

  4. The comment made on Tuesday, March 11 2014 at 9.58 was mine, and I forgot to say something that has been worrying me since.

I am so, so sorry about your sister. To lose someone you care about is bad enough, but the circustances of your loss seem so much harder for those left behind. Please accept my sincere condolences.

  5. Thank you for that. It's hard to believe it has been six months now - still feels like it was yesterday sometimes.

I also can't believe someone actually read through my whole blog. Considering it's so very much a stream of consciousness, pour my heart out to sort out my head, diary type of blog.

Fiona: I think I needed to hear someone say that it's necessary to just really pull up on activity to get rid of a cough. You weren't the only one to say it but you were the first (and said it the nicest!). I've really been trying to take it easy but it's very frustrating. I started Wednesday with a bit of tinnitus and a not-quite-but-nearly dizzy feeling. Really reminded me of when I had a bad ear infection a couple of years ago and served as a wake-up call that I'm really not quite ready for full-on life yet and I ended up pulling out of the concert I was supposed to sing in tomorrow. I'm much better now and would be able to sing tomorrow without too much difficulty but the thought of rehearsal after work not only on Wednesday but also on Friday was just too much. Of course the downside of the bronchitis/cold clearing up is that hayfever has started to kick in with a vengence. Typical. The world is just determined to make a moaning Minny out of me!

Thanks also Kay for those tips. I do do the vicks with socks trick - in my experience the main thing it does is lower your temperature so it was very useful during the week that I had a fever. Didn't yet try the cider vinegar thing because honestly, it sounds completely revolting but I'm so sick of this lingering cough that I think I might actually give it a try.

  6. I read it all because some of the themes - weight loss, debt-busting, decluttering, difficult work colleagues, man problems - are very familiar, and close to home. It's refreshing to read a blog where someone admits they are still struggling with the same old same old, and yet keeps going.

I hope the cough clears up and you get your energy back.

  7. Oh, that is nice to hear, Moonwaves!

I can't believe it has been 6 months either. A shocking reality.

I hope you've been recovering and recuperating. Tinnitus is something that drives me to the absolute brink. Fortunately, it very rarely affects me but I know I don't cope at all with it. I hope you are on the mend now and getting there!
